Contraindications
A person who is not able to warm the moist cold compress for example: babies, very frail, elderly, hypothyroidism, low BMI, or emaciated patients. Use dry compress instead.
Chilled client
Afraid or hypersensitive to cold water.
Claustrophobia
Special Considerations
Do not use on infants.
Use dry heating compress if patient is unable to warm it up.
Ensure the patient is warm.
Cotton should be wrung out so it doesn't drip.
Outer cover should be larger than inner cloth to cover it completely.
Procedure
Wring cotton cloth from cold water and apply to area.
Cover well with wool flannel, snugly but not tight.
Use for at least 30 min.
When removing the compress, wipe the area with a cold wet cloth and dry.
