Special Considerations
Be gentle with impaired circulation or impaired sensibility.
Constant communication
Moisture intensifies heating of skin.
Bony areas burn easily.
Avoid burning or chilling.
Handle with care
Revulsive
: Apply heat 3-5 min, alternate with 30-60 sec. cold friction, and repeat 3 cycles. (stimulates).
Sedative
: 10-minute fomentation. Finish with 10-30 sec. cold (mild friction).
Procedure
Heat fomentation
Wrap fomentation in wool.
Apply fomentation to the body part being treated.
Apply cold compress to forehead.
Keep fomentation on for 3-5 minutes.
Cold mitten friction between changes (30 sec) and dry thoroughly
Make 3-5 changes.
Finish with a full body cold mitten friction
Dry thoroughly
Rest at least 30-60 min.
