Dr. G.K. Abbott says the contrast shower "is a vigorous tonic and stimulant." Tonics are not indicated in acute illness. In chronic illness, all patients are to be carefully assessed for contraindications and special considerations followed. He goes on, "It should not be ventured upon without considerable preliminary training by milder measures." By "training" he means using graduated tonic cold for all patients who don't already use contrast showers.
